About the Conference
The idea of Brihattat Bharat represents the vast and rich tangible and intangible heritage of Indian
sub-continent. More than a geographical or political entity, it represents a civilizational continuum that
has contributed significantly in diverse domains of study. The impact extends across South, Southeast, and
parts of East and Central Asia. The knowledge generated, accumulated, transmitted, and practised in diverse
domains, including philosophy, education, science, art, trade, language, spirituality, etc., is considered
the knowledge heritage of Bharat that travelled beyond territorial and political demarcations. This allowed
the shaping and reshaping, influencing and being influenced by diverse cultures over millennia.
The civilizational spread of Indian Knowledge Systems has been epistemic in nature and largely based on
dialogic traditions that distinguish it from that of imperial and expansionist models. Texts, gurus, monks,
artisans, merchants, and travellers functioned as carriers of ideas, value systems, science, and practices.
This, as a result, endured civilizational linkages across Asia.
The National Conference on Brihattar Bharat: Knowledge, Culture, and Civilizational Dialogues seek to
explore the expansive idea of Brihattar Bharat (Greater India) as a civilizational network that has been
shaped by interactions, exchanges, trade routes, shared heritage, and scientific & philosophical traditions
across Asia and beyond. Organized under the aegis of the Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems,
the conference aims to provide a platform to scholars, practitioners, academicians, and researchers to
foster interdisciplinary dialogue on historical & epistemic foundations, philosophical, spiritual,
linguistic traditions & transmissions, knowledge networks & trans-regional exchanges, art, architecture, and
aesthetic traditions in Brihattar Bharat while also examining its contemporary relevance and contribution to
global knowledge traditions.
