Message from the University Librarian

The Chandigarh University Library is a vital part of the institution, supporting teaching, learning, and research through its Central Library and fifteen specialized libraries. Fully computerized with an advanced Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), the library offers diverse academic resources and user-focused services. It creates an intellectually stimulating environment for the acquisition, evaluation, and dissemination of scholarly information, crucial to the university’s academic and research activities.

The CU Library is a vibrant academic hub offering a diverse range of print and digital resources, including books, journals, e-books, and online databases. With 24/7 internet access, extended hours, and a spacious, thoughtfully designed environment of approximately 87,049 sq. ft. with 2,800 seats, the library supports both individual study and collaborative research. It features dedicated areas for faculty and researchers, as well as discussion rooms for students, embodying a commitment to fostering a dynamic and conducive space for learning, discovery, and scholarly exchange.

CU Library offers a comprehensive range of online databases and resources for university-level research. Our subscriptions include Scopus, Web of Science, J-Gate (Science and Technology, Science and Humanities), Manupatra, HeinOnline, EBC Reader, and SCC Online Web Edition for legal research. IEEE ASPP supports engineering and technology, while EBSCO provides extensive collections in Art and Architecture (1,053), Management (1,078), and Hospitality and Tourism (841). EBSCO’s 240,361 e-books include 4,423 in IT core areas, plus 27 Pearson and 4 McGraw Hill engineering e-books. The library also offers 138,130 printed books, 329 printed periodicals, 38,747 e-journals, and 217 theses. Facilities include 152 digital library systems, 100% Wi-Fi coverage, smart library tablets, and a 100% power backup system. On-campus access is via IP-based authentication, and off-campus access is available through IPsec VPN settings. The library operates under a detailed Library SOP.

The budget for infrastructure, library, and other learning resources is allocated annually based on the recommendations of respective committees. The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is available for users, and ICT facilitates access to library resources. Additionally, the National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) offers e-lessons to staff and students to support and enrich the teaching and learning process. Besides standard infrastructure, the library provides unique sections including textbooks, reference materials, study materials for competitive examinations, maps, audio/video facilities, and projects and theses.

The Library Steering Committee, nominated by the Vice-Chancellor, oversees library processes and provides strategic direction. Since 2012, the library has focused on electronic resource development and IT integration. Chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and composed of 25 departmental representatives, the Committee's initiatives include upgrading Library Management Software for remote access, subscribing to major databases, implementing an RFID system, and developing a digital library. They also work on improving accessibility, expanding e-resources, adjusting journal subscriptions, and enhancing infrastructure. The Best Library User Award encourages students and faculty to make better use of library resources.

The University Library continually works to further the development of its services and has a global presence. We aim to provide you with the best possible service. We look forward to your visit.
