Entrepreneurship Development

Chandigarh University has focused on Entrepreneurship since its inception. Top leadership of the university gives utmost priority to the development of the entrepreneurship division. For this, EDC (Entrepreneurship Cell) has been established in the University. It has organized number of awareness workshops, Business Plan competitions, Startup Interactions etc. to promote the Entrepreneurship among the management, engineering, pharmacy, hospitality, animation and other departments. In 2014, the University established the intellectual property right and patent cell in the university to protect the innovation and patents of the students and faculty. Other than this, CU applied for IEDC (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell) from National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 2015 and got a funding of INR 55 Lac. After getting the approval, the university also gave an additional funding of INR 1 crore for establishment of the TBI. The centre also started giving the seed money to the start-ups apart from the mentoring from experts from industry and universities. Taking the initiative one step ahead, the university applied for the NIDHI-TBI in the year 2016 and got the approval of INR 10 crore from National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Department of Science and Technology (DST). In 2021 CUTBI got 5 Crore Funding as SEED support from DST.

The following facilities have been created by the CU-TBI for incubates:

  • Installed four 3D printers (SLA, MJP and FDM technologies)
  • Built an ultra-advance convention hall with all required amenities (HD projector, Round Table, Sound system, Video Conferencing, etc.)
  • Advance manufacturing system lab for build the prototyping of products
  • New large-size cabin with all needed infrastructural facilities
  • Open sitting area for the discussion.

As a result of all these initiatives, 118 start-ups have been registered with the CU-TBI and 22 start-ups have been established in different states of India.

Under TBI policy, selected incubates get a seed money of INR 6.5 lakhs with 18 months of free incubation. The facilities include: Cabin with internet, PC, Access to advance labs, AI Lab, Additive manufacturing centre, FMS las etc for product development along with mentorship.

  • CUTBI also connects the incubated to the grant institutions i.e., MSME, PRISM, PRAYAS etc along with loan facilitators i.e., Mudra, Start-up India Loan.
  • CUTBI also connects the start-ups to the angel investors for funding’s i.e., Hyderabad Angel investor, Ludhiana Angel Investors etc (six groups on board).
  • CUTBI also organize its annual festival EFFECTUS (in 2019, 200+ start-ups participated in the evet along with the investors)

IPR Cell was established in 2015 for mentoring the students on patents/copyright/trademark filling and technology transfer.

  • 1013 patents have been filed.
  • 643 patents have been published.
  • 52 Patents have been granted.
  • Chandigarh University funds the patent cost for all the students and faculty.
  • 26 Start-ups have been filled out of patents products.

Research and Innovation

Chandigarh University, with the support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) - Government of India, has delivered 500 litres of hand sanitizer and face masks to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The alcohol-based hand sanitizer has been prepared by the students and staff members at Chandigarh University. Students and researchers of Chandigarh University have made rich contributions under the SYST Scheme of DST (Scheme for Young Scientists & Technologists) during the COVID-19 crisis in India. Earlier one of the research scholars of Chandigarh University designed 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way splitters to overcome the shortfall of ventilators in India with quickest possible time. The students and research scholars are also working on various research projects that can contribute to the COVID-19 crisis.

Chandigarh University has been ranked as the leading standalone university to have filed the highest number patents by the Government of India’s Office Controller General of Patent Design and Trademarks. The quality of research work directly translates into the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom, thereby benefiting the students, society and the country.

The University continued with its policy of promoting a culture of research, consultancy, publications and participation in seminars/ symposia/ conferences, etc. The faculty of the University has 3500+ publications in Scopus & WoS, participated in 347 International Conferences, 455 National Conferences and published/edited books/book chapters in AY 2019-20 and The University faculty also received 57 research grants more than 50 Crores in AY 2019-20

Thus, the University has shown an outstanding performance in the area of entrepreneurship, which is distinctive to its vision, priority and thrust.
