International Peace Day Celebration

On 21 September 2019, NSS unit of Chandigarh University has organized painting competition with the theme “PEACE” to the mark the celebration of “International Peace Day”. All 10 units of NSS have enthusiastically participated in the competition to deliver the message of peace. 26 students from UIBT, Unit 8 (Block 9) have voluntarily participated in the competition and painted the messages to maintain peace in the country. UIBT students bagged first and second prizes.

Organizing Fit India Plogging Run

NSS unit of Chandigarh University has organized the Fit India Plogging Run on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, 2 October, 2019. Participants from different units have gathered in the adopted villages Gharuan and Mamupur. During the run students and faculty coordinators have plugged plastic bags and waste plastics in the village.

University Institute of Biotechnology of Chandigarh University has taken an initiative to conduct its social responsibility towards society and in context to this, on 28 February, 2020 the team consisting of faculties and students have visited Gharuan village, one of the adopted village for sensitizing villagers and making them aware of the precautions that they should take amidst the pandemic caused by covid-19

University Institute of Biotechnology of Chandigarh University has taken an initiative to conduct its social responsibility towards society and in context to this, the team consisting of faculties and students have visited Prabh Asra Ashram, a home for helpless mentally/physically disabled, orphan and unclaimed missing destitute. Also UIBT team has presented the memento from Chandigarh University to the owner (Sr. Shemsher Singh) as a token of appreciation to serve humanity and social cause.

Environment Club Event: The Green Wall

To create more awareness among students about the importance of plants and their role in balancing ecosystem, the green wall event was conducted on 27/01/2020 by UIBT under the aegis of Environment Club. Students with their teams displayed plants on walls in different pattern by using different props. Students used different types of ornamental plants and some medicinal plants also for green wall display.

Health Club Event: Awareness Rally

The main idea of the event was to create awareness among villagers about hygiene and sanitation methods to be followed with special emphasis on Coronavirus. A rally was organized and skit was performed on 17/2/2020, by the students of UIBT to make villagers familiar with the problems that could occur if proper hygiene is not maintained.

Workshop on Fermentation And Bioprocess Technology

National workshop and symposium on advances in fermentation and bioprocess technology was organized by the University institute of biotechnology, Chandigarh University on the 11th April- 12th April 2019. One fifty students, research scholar and faculty from different deaprtment and colleges participated in the event. The highlights of the events were:

Seminar was conducted on 4th January 2016 on the topic “Process of patent filing, its various parameters and patentable biotechnological products”. The resource person for the seminar was Dr. Parikshit Bansal, Professor & IPR Expert, NIPER, Mohali. Dr. Bansal is a Patent attorney and an IPR Expert. His lecture was attended by students of B.Sc 2nd year and M.sc 1st year. He discussed various parameters that are considered before accepting the patent application. He also introduced students with patentable and non patentable biotechnology based products. At the end the expert enlightened students for bringing innovative products and processes that can be patented.

Dr. Anirban Roy Choudhary, Principal Scientistat IMTECH, Chandigarh and has expertise in bioprocess development and scale up, fermentative production of polysaccharides and metal nanoparticles. He has delivered a talk on Petriplate to Pilot plant: Developing Bioprocess for the production of exopolysaccharides dated 26 March, 2019. B.Sc. Biotechnology sixth and M.Sc. Biotechnology second semester students were benefited with expert talk.

University Institute of Biotechnology, Chandigarh University organized an expert session on 10-11-2017 on the topic titled as “Microbes and fermentation”. Dr. Wamik Aazmi of HPU Shimla,” was invited. M.Sc I, M.Sc III, B.Sc V students were participants. The expert shared his enlightened students with Advances in Fermentation industry and current trends in the field. He guided students to take up research projects to commercial stage using fermentation techniques.

Awareness drive on Mushroom cultivation and use of biofertilizers

The students and faculty of Department of Biotechnology, CU, visited the nearby village farmers of Sahouran Village, for spreading the awareness on Mushroom cultivation and use of biofertilizers. Our team obsereved that villagers had a good knowledge over organic farming but were not willing to use it, because of easily available and cheap chemical fertilizers. Students encouraged them for using the bio fertilizers in place of conventional chemical fertilizers by promoting this technology with advanced knowledge. There was active participation of the people and students, and gram panchayat appreciated our efforts

Awareness camp on Vermicomposting and Organic Farming

The students and faculty of Department of Biotechnology visited the nearby village farmers of Sahouran Village, for spreading the awareness on vermiomposting and organic farming. They surveyed the problems faced by the farmers in these directions and tried to bridge the gap between the farmers and modern biotechnological means of farming. The team motivated the farmers to use kitchen waste and vermi composting prepare manure as organic fertilizers.
